History of the French 75

The French 75 dates back to World War I and was named after the French 75mm field gun, known for its precision and punch. First created in 1915 at Harry's New York Bar in Paris, this elegant cocktail combines the refreshing qualities of a gin sour with the celebratory sparkle of champagne. Over time, it became a staple of refined gatherings and a symbol of effortless sophistication.

Tips and Variations

  • Chill the Champagne: Ensure your champagne is well-chilled for the best flavor and effervescence.
  • Balance the Sweetness: Adjust the simple syrup to taste, especially if using a sweeter champagne.
  • Classic Presentation: Serve in a flute for a traditional look, or use a coupe for a vintage touch.
Variations:
  • Cognac French 75: Swap gin for cognac for a richer, deeper flavor.
  • Elderflower French 75: Add a splash of elderflower liqueur for floral notes.
  • Berry French 75: Muddle fresh berries with the lemon juice and simple syrup before shaking.

Serving Suggestions

The French 75’s crisp, citrusy character pairs beautifully with:
  • Appetizers: Oysters, smoked salmon blinis, or goat cheese crostini.
  • Light Salads: Arugula with citrus vinaigrette or a watermelon feta salad.
  • Desserts: Lemon bars, macarons, or champagne-poached pears.
