History of the Tom Collins

The Tom Collins is a cocktail with roots in the 19th century, gaining fame during the “Tom Collins Hoax” of the 1870s. The hoax involved sending bar patrons to search for a fictitious man named Tom Collins. The cocktail became so popular that it was included in Jerry Thomas' 1876 "The Bartender’s Guide." Its balance of gin, citrus, and soda makes it a refreshing and enduring favorite.

Tips and Variations

  • Use quality gin: A smooth gin enhances the cocktail’s herbal and citrus flavors.
  • Fresh ingredients: Squeeze fresh lemons and use quality simple syrup for the best taste.
  • Adjust sweetness: Add more or less simple syrup based on your preference.
Variations:
  • Vodka Collins: Substitute gin with vodka for a lighter twist.
  • Berry Collins: Muddle fresh berries, such as raspberries or strawberries, for a fruity flavor.
  • Elderflower Collins: Add a splash of elderflower liqueur for floral complexity.
